I can't help thinking back once in awhile when I worked with my dad and communication with other farriers was almost unheard of and learning consisted of mostly trial and error.  Unlike years ago, we are now fortunate to have a lot of information available and some very talented folks willing to share their knowledge.  The modern day horse requires more than just a knowledge of mechanics, but also an understanding of the horse and what is expected of it.

Horseshoeing has been good to me, and to my family.  I want to continue to give a lot back to this profession, and the best way I can do it is to spend my time teaching people who want to learn and are ready to come here and work hard at improving their skills in horsemanship, forgework, and the mechanics of shoeing.

Picture and Text from "Farnam Magazine" by John Grow, 1977

Danny Ward, one of the few third generation farriers in the world learned his trade from his father who in turn learned from his. Farriery and blacksmithing has been a life time study for the Wards-for well over one hundred and twenty-five years, three generations have continually worked to better the horse and trade, and Danny has been no exception.  He says he's lucky to be doing two things in life he enjoys- helping horses and helping people help themselves.
